Nainital

NainitalNainital is a popular hill station in the Kumaon hills in Uttarakhand. Throughout the year. Visitors in monsoon need to be careful about possible landslides as rains during monsoon is generally quite heavy. Best visibility in Nainital is after monsoon - from October to February. Skies are generally clear during these months and tourists can see long distances clearly. Snow clad mountains in the background are most clearly visible during these very months. It is quite ironical that tourists flock to Nainital in huge numbers during summers when temperature soars high in the plains. It is highly advisable to utilize Dussehra holidays and winter vacations in Nainital.

What to do info

Nainital has a number of attractive lakes to explore. Apart from Naini Lake, one should go and explore Naukuchiatal, which is a hub of water sports activities. The other lakes one can explore are Bhimtal and Sattal. One can also enjoy paragliding in Naukuchiatal. Nainital area is also good for treakking and bird sighting. There are quite a few waterfalls which tourists can reach by walking through the Kumaoni villages situated in and around Nainital. Raj Bhavan in Nainital is one of the few Raj Bhavans in India open for public viewing. Tourists can also visit Nainital Zoo to see rare high altitude animals like snow leopards, Himalayan black bear and steppe eagles. A walk around the Naini Lake on the Mall is also a pleasant experience.   From Nainital one can drive to nearby attractions like Mukteswar, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and Jageshwar. Mukteswar is known for an ancient temple located on the top of a mountain from where the views of snow clad mountains and valleys are just awesome. Mukteswar is also known for its natural beauty and is home to waterfalls. It is a lovely place to explore Kumaoni villages. Tourists can enjoy snowfall in Mukteswar every winter.   Binsar, close to Almora town, is also just a little over an hour drive from Nainital. It is home to a wildlife sanctuary surrounded by snow clad mountains in the backdrop. Apart from enjoying quality time in nature in the Sanctuary, willing tourists can experience Kumaoni culture by trekking to some villages located well within the Sanctuary area. A whole range of Himalayan peaks are visible from different places in Binsar. A visit to unique Kasar Devi Temple is also a must for visitors. It is said to be a place where Swami Vivekananda meditated for quite some time.   Jageshwar is famous for a temple complex  featuring more than 100 shrines dating from the 9th century. The temples, which are under the Archaeological Survey of India, have yielded more than 25 inscriptions. One can also stop at the famous Golu Devta temple on the way from Nainital.
